Magnetic field induced entropy change and magnetoelasticity in Ni-Mn-Ga alloys
The magnetocaloric effect that originates from the martensitic transition in the ferromagnetic Ni-Mn-Ga shape-memory alloy is studied. We show that this effect is controlled by the magnetostructural coupling at both the martensitic variant and magnetic domain length scales. A large entropy change induced by moderate magnetic fields is obtained for alloys in which the magnetic moment of the two ...
متن کاملMagnetic Properties and Structural Phase Transformations of NiMnGa Alloys
The magnetic properties and structural phase transformations of Heusler alloys Ni2+ Mn1 Ga and Ni2 Mn1+ 2Ga1+ 2 were investigated. It was found that the martensitic transformation temperature increases and the Curie temperature decreases with decreasing Mn concentration in the Ni2+ Mn1 Ga system, but the magnetic properties decrease faster than those do in the Ni2 Mn1+ 2Ga1+ 2 system. It sugges...
متن کاملGiant magnetic-field-induced strains in Heusler alloy NiMnGa with modified composition
A giant magnetic-field-induced strain ~MFIS! of 23100 ppm has been obtained in Heusler alloy Ni52Mn22.2Ga25.8 single crystal in the @001# direction at a temperature from 23 to 31 °C. This MFIS reaches saturation in an applied field about 6 kOe, and exhibits the same amplitude with an opposite sign while the field is perpendicular to the samples. According to a previous model, this MFIS associat...
متن کاملMagnetoelasticity and Magnetoresistance in Cu–Al–Mn Shape-Memory Alloys
This paper is aimed at studying the effect of a magnetic field on the martensitic transition of a Cu–Al–Mn shape-memory alloy. The martensitic transition has been studied through resistance measurements under applied magnetic fields ranging from 0 to 50 kOe. Negative magnetoresistance showing an almost linear dependence with the square of the magnetization has been observed. This magnetoresisti...
متن کاملField-induced entropy change in the manganite with significant short-range magnetic order
Effects of short-range magnetic order on magnetic entropy change have been studied for the manganese oxide Eu0.55Sr0.45MnO3. Superparamagnetic clusters composed of seven to ten Mn ions, depending on applied field, have been derived in the paramagnetic state of the compound based on the analysis of dc susceptibility. The presence of short-range magnetic order greatly depresses the magnetic entro...
